It's Valentine's Day
Before the event was Christianised, Valentine’s was originally a pagan fertility festival where, according to legend, young women were paired off with their chosen partner for the year after a lucky dip type event.
By the 15th century it began to head in the direction of the ode to consumerism we see today with written valentine's notes becoming more common. The 1840s then saw Esther A. Howland beginning to sell the first mass-produced Valentine's day cards in America.
But somewhere between fertility festivals and balloons with bears inside, Valentine’s Day, went awry and it was all scary clowns and wildly inappropriate sexual and murderous innuendo.
