What Is Residential Aged Care?

Residential aged care provides 24/7 accommodation, personal support, and clinical care for older Australians who can no longer live independently. Services include help with daily activities, medication management, social programs, and even end-of-life care—all delivered by qualified professionals in modern, well-regulated homes.

Who Is Eligible for Residential Aged Care?

Eligibility is determined via a face-to-face assessment by the ACAT/ACAS team, which evaluates your level of need.
Typically, it's available to:
• Australians aged 65 and over who can’t live independently, and
• Younger individuals with significant health needs or dementia—if the provider accepts NDIS-funded residents

What Types of Residential Aged Care Are Available?

  • Permanent care: Long-term placement with ongoing support.

  • Respite care: Short-term stays (up to 63 days per year) to relieve family carers

  • Transition care: Post-hospital care (usually up to 84 days) to assist with recovery before returning home.

What Care and Services Are Included?

Hotel style services

Includes meals, laundry, cleaning, utilities, social activities, and a furnished, homely environment.

Personal & clinical care

Help with bathing, dressing, mobility, continence, medications, allied health, emotional needs, and more—tailored to your individual care plan.

How Much Does Residential Aged Care Cost?

Fees follow a structured model.
If you enter an aged care home on or after 1 Nov 2025: you’ll pay the Basic Daily Fee, plus means‑tested contributions for non‑clinical care (NCCC) and everyday living (HSC). Each has a daily cap and a lifetime cap; contributions also stop after 4 years in permanent care if you haven’t reached the lifetime cap. Clinical care is fully subsidised. Accommodation is still paid via RAD, DAP or a mix.

Basic Daily Fee

A set amount based on 85% of the single Age Pension, mandatory for all residents.

NCC & HSC fees

The Non-Clinical Care Contribution replaces the old Means-Tested Care Fee, it is still based on income and assets. Payments stop after four years in permanent care, or around $130,000 total.
Hotelling Supplement Contribution- also means tested with a daily cap.

Accommodation Costs (RAD vs DAP)

Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD): Lump sum paid upfront.
Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP): Ongoing payment if RAD is not fully paid.
• Many residents choose a combination

How Can I Pay for Residential Aged Care?

Self-funding: Use personal savings or assets (consider RAD vs DAP impact).
Government subsidies: Means-tested support for care and accommodation.
Financial advice: Important to optimize payments and protect assets.
